We pulled into Mitchell, South Dakota around 5:00 pm in the evening. We had a quaint Air Bnb apartment right in the middle of downtown, on top of Elixer Coffee Shop. Since Mitchell is so small (like all towns in South Dakota), this convenient location was a short walk to everything! Even though town seemed eerily empty, we enjoyed our quick stay, reliving my husband’s visit to Corn Palace as a child.
Our first stop was dinner at The Depot Pub & Grill. We sat on the back porch, which was right on the railroad tracks & was a fun spot for the kids! The food was great too!
We then walked the downtown strip, with mostly closed stores, down to the famous Corn Palace. To give a little history, the original Corn Palace was built in this location in 1892 and the current building has been there since 1919. It’s redecorated with naturally colored corn each year and is known as the “agricultural show-place of the world.”
As you walk in, the smell of popcorn is irresistible. Our 3 year old enjoyed walking around, carrying her bag of popcorn, I’m sure leaving a trail behind her. Inside, there is a timeline along the wall explaining the history of the Corn Palace, a short video you can watch, and a big gift shop filled with lots of nicknacks. Don’t expect to spend more than 30-45 minutes inside. Unfortunately there’s not much more to say about Corn Palace. Glad we came and saw, but probably won’t go back!
