Jackson Hole was such a fun place to break up the days of hiking and parks. It’s full of shopping, restaurants, and our favorite, Town Square. We got there mid afternoon, with plans to stay until after the “Shootout” at 6:00 (more on that later).
We began by walking through a few shops, but being a tourist town, they were all pretty crowded. Teton Toys was definitely a hit though! We allowed our three year old to pick ONE toy and the hunt was on for something perfect. She ended up settling on a Unicorn “shooter” that shot out rainbow colored balls that you insert under his tail! I kid you not, she was extatic!
Once we did a little shopping, we had our picture taken with the famous antler arches and found a place in the shade. Our 8 month old loved crawling and picking up sticks (also trying to eat them) while our three year old made friends chasing chipmunks away from the trash cans. We were planning on grabbing dinner but we weren’t very hungry and the kids were enjoying their freedom so much, my husband grabbed some treats from a bakery, Cowboy Coffee, that we enjoyed on the lawn. It’s not vacation unless we let our kid have donuts for dinner, right?
At about 5:30, we headed to the Northeast entrance of Town Square to try to get first dibs on good a spot for the Shootout, beginning at 6:00. Soon, people began setting up props and instructing us where to line up on the intersection for the best views. Before the show began, the characters came around promoting their full show at The Playhouse. A sweet cowgirl named Emily gave our toddler lots of attention and we even snapped a picture with her. It was fun picking her out and watching her performance!
Once the first gunshot rang, our baby was DONE! It scared him so bad. Unfortunately my husband had to take him away and only listen to the show from afar. I had prepared our three year old beforehand about what to expect, but she was still a little scared as well. She sat in my lap and held my hand tight. At the end though, she said she enjoyed it. I know I did! The whole show lasted about 15 minutes, including dancing, singing, and yes, shooting! This shootout is a Jackson Hole staple, conducted 6 days a week (no shooting on Sundays as they say) for 56 years!
